Extremism, Vacuums, and Yes Men
That sounds a lot more portentous than it actually is, ha ha. It’s more that one feeds the other in the other and makes all sorts of messy little things, I’ve found, and I was reminded of that earlier today. Just that the more we hear that yes, we are right, and then we tell that person that they’re right too and wow we’re so right we know better than everyone!!11one… it’s not really a good thing, is it. No, we need dissenting opinions to form rounded, healthy opinions, but it sure is hard to give and receive such in this day and age where it’s very easy to find a niche where you can always be ‘right’ – viva la Internet!
Because of this ability to find niches where one is always right, I suspect there are a lot more fragmented, extremist views. We can’t all be right, sure, but that doesn’t mean that everyone else in the world is wrong either. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of folks who need to cling to their beliefs as the one true way (generally out of fear, I suspect), and so illogical and irrational behavioral patterns takes over to protect what is ‘right’.
tl;dr (I’m tired today, heh) – Believe and do as you will, but don’t start calling everyone else evil or stupid or bad because they don’t agree with you. If everyone is screaming yes in your ear, step back and try to find someone who disagrees. Chances are, they probably have something useful to say. 😉 And if not, well… at least you made a point to approach things from another angle… or something.
