Trying to think with a teething toddler around is akin to walking a tightrope as people shoot at you. There’s nowhere to go, your performance is compromised, and you don’t really get a choice in the matter – joy! And while I know that this too shall pass, it doesn’t really bring much in the way of comfort when you’re trying to climb the ceiling and not hyperventilate in your attempts to stay calm and in control. *chuckles ruefully*
In rather exciting techy news, today is IPv6 Day:
Web giants promote new IPv6 internet address system
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13685772
For those not in the know, IPv6 is going to be the future of the internet. The current addressing system, IPv4, ran out of new addresses back in February. While the internet can continue on in this form, it can’t grow; it’s being compared to when London ran out of telephone numbers (which is apt). However, because of the cash money issue, there are a lot of businesses/ISPs/etc that haven’t upgraded yet. That’s kind of understandable; cost is always a deterrent. But as it’s something that everyone has known for ages had to happen, one can hope that today will give encouragement to get the world rolling in the right direction.
In other net news, Facebook once again makes asses of themselves and tries to pretend that they’re apologetic:
Facebook sorry over face tagging launch
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13693791
You know, Facebook Facetiousbook… this would have more impact if you didn’t have to apologise for being asses every.single.time you try to change something. I get it’s your site, and we all signed the ‘We agree to let you steal our souls’ agreement, but there’s nothing wrong with oh… listening to your customers. Sure, maybe some people are totally down with their friends tagging them in pictures based on your creepy facial recognition software, but not me – leave.me.alone. And if you want to turn it off (since everything is opt out with Facetiousbook *still*), there’s a great link to Sophos that explains how to get to the setting, ’cause like all settings on Facetiousbook… it’s dead hard to find. *snorts*
The last tiny bit that has caught my interest is just in time for my annual vacation:
Netherlands: Pot shops to be off limits to foreign tourists
http://lat.ms/m1hyD1
As an American, there are three things that come to mind when I think of the Netherlands – windmills, tulips, and pot. I don’t know many people who go on vacation to see tulips or windmills, as pretty as they are, and clogs aren’t much of a draw either. Well, and the pot isn’t much of a draw for me these days either – I got that all out of my system as a kid. *grins* I think that it’s very brave of them to make this move, but that the detractors might have a point – it might just be tourism suicide. I guess we’ll see how it pans out.
For me, I’ve realized that Amsterdam is only like… 7 hours away by car (ferry route and the like) and an hour by plane… which obviously reminds me that I really need to get back to the mainland sometime and explore. It’s been eleven years since I last have been on the mainland (and only France), so this needs some serious rectification… once I get my passport back + get my British passport. 🙂
