Appropriately British
Today is amazingly ghastly. It’s overcast, the air is stagnant, and the… well… kind of obvious the clouds are to blame for pinning the heat down, eh? I very likely will succumb to the glories of air conditioning in the near future, though I’m going to give Mr. Breeze and Mr. Ceiling Fan a better chance once our handyman friend has cleared off from doing us some tasks. He’s got problems with strobing, so ceiling fan while he is here = no go.
I haven’t had a chance to paw through the news yet, which is probably for the best. Most of it is going to be regurgitations of regurgitations of last week’s big stories, and as I’m not sure I slept last night, I’m not really in the mood to wade through it all. Which reminds me of something I read this morning that resonated with me:
The news coverage of the Norway mass-killings was fact-free conjecture

One of my friends posted this on Facebook, and it made me smile ever so slightly. Yes, I did find it odd that so many media sources (BBC included, shame shame) were trying to plug hours of otherwise boring repetitious prattle with crazily inaccurate speculation. That plumping a so-called expert in front of the screen makes it just so. I don’t think that so many sources getting it initially wrong will make some magic fixer-upper happen, but I can hope it’ll make some thing before they start bleating off.
*waits for a breeze and sighs* One of the odd jobs our handyman is doing today is repairing our gate. The winds in this country can get quite brutal, and my first year here had me afraid of getting carried off by tornadoes! I get the why of it – narrow gaps between oodles of buildings stacked so closely makes for the keening whistling noise that, with time, becomes almost charming and comforting… but it’s brutal on our poor gate. This is probably the fourth time that our handyman has had to come out in as many years to shore it up, whether that be a new post, new hinges (twice now?), various mechanisms to secure it (there’s a couple of bolts, a lock, and a latch… not enough), or today’s prize – fixing the gate where the wind and latch have eroded the top of it, and probably redoing screws again too. I’m sure he’ll let me know when he’s done, but man… can’t the wind like… ever so kindly bend to my wishes and exist in a cheerful, non-damaging gust now, and lay off the heavier gusting with the changes of the seasons? No? Fie, fie Mother Nature – you’re mean.
Ah well… still doesn’t stop me having to do things, overwarm or not… besta get back to the Monday chore routine. Here’s hoping your Monday is pleasant in spite of it being that day. 😉
