News Numb
One of the worst things about all this rolling news crap, in my opinion, is how it takes out the seriousness and import of world events. I’m so sick of hearing about Libya, about earthquakes, about miners that I find a larger degree of apathy and disregard than I might otherwise feel. Oh sure, rolling news coverage means that more people can get the news who might not have been able to at the ‘traditional’ times, but still…
I can’t blame it all on the news either – I’m as feeder bar driven as the rest of our species. I click refresh on my mail and get a giddy thrill when there’s something there (usually junk, ha ha), and that goes for news site, game sites, etc. We’re conditioned by our modern environment by some degree to be crack addicts for the non-stop connectivity and data flow, and so it goes, it goes.
I guess I’m hoping that if I write this out, it will make me more aware of the situation. I’m not sure what to do about it personally, if only for the fact that connecting to the world through this little black box is significantly less stressful and exhausting as actually going amongst people in meatspace. I think a lot of introverts would agree with me on that point; this enables us to have as rich a social life as our extroverted peers without causing significant damage to self. When put in that light, it makes me feel less bad for it; I’m so freaking introverted that instant messaging wears me out!
…
Obviously, the train of thought went on a detour again… so it goes. *grins*
