I promised myself I would take it easy this weekend, so I’m going to get back to that. I will take a moment to point out to you a spot of amusement from yesterday, though:
Go Daddy pulls SOPA support
I’m not sure what GoDaddy was thinking in supporting this in the first place, but it’s lost them the business of Wikipedia, though their change of heart has currently kept the Cheezburger Network amongst its clientèle. Most friends I know are switching if they still had GoDaddy domains; I quit using them 8 or 9 years ago, and have been a happy Dreamhost customer ever since. One of my friends has also suggested that Hover is a great domain registration service, but obviously… not hosting, if that would be something you were looking for yourself.
And if you weren’t so sure of the depths of GoDaddy’s turnaround, they have apparently gone back and stripped out anything referring to supporting SOPA on their blogs and website, though they’re not so far gone as to try to claim that they ever supported it (there are a few companies that fit in that box). They have also:
Desperation: Go Daddy calling customers, begging them to stay
I’m sort of hoping that isn’t true, but… I wouldn’t be surprised, either.
Just look at it this way – that’s real people power having a real effect on a real world situation. You and me and all sorts of other regular people stood up and voted with our feet/money. So while I don’t think it’s going to be the nail in the coffin on SOPA, it should make some companies think twice about continuing your support. If you want to make your opinion known to other supporters, check out this list. I’ll add that some on the list are already refuting their addition, such as Gibson guitars (which has been stricken from this copy – yay!), so obviously – double check before boycotting. And woo, here’s a list with phone numbers. You can also have the original government link, but there is a mysterious dearth of list today… how strange.
Anyways, keep up the good work, and have a good weekend.
