Wear Your Love Like…
Today is, apparently, one of the most contentious days on the calendar. The battle lines are drawn, there is no room for argument – this is either the best or worst day of the year for so many people. And every year, it makes me laugh – why, mes amis, are you getting so worked up by a Hallmark holiday?
I’m sure this is the point where some of my readers would snort derisively, and point out that my being married negates me having a stance on things. I have someone there for the day, so why do I care if someone hates or likes it? Well, what if I told you I was stood up or alone pretty much every single year from 1996 to 2006? I ignore the years before that, ’cause I was but a child. Dates were made and ignored, boyfriends would suddenly up and vanish – woe for my tiny blackened heart! By all rights, I should hate the crap out of it and all the cloying sweetness (which I abhor anyways, being a non-sentimental sort).
Perhaps that’s exactly why I can tolerate the day – I can shrug off one day out of 365 (0r 366). I can smile at the cards and the flowers and the candy, because I can hope that people are taking at least this one day of the year to express their love and appreciation of each other, to help the good feelings flow forth. I know I know – many a naysayer snidely insists that it should be done daily, and that because it’s a designated day, it doesn’t count. While I admire that example purported by these nifty protofolks, methinks they’ve forgotten that our modern-day society doesn’t exactly lend itself to stopping and smelling the roses. I would argue that designated days kind of force the average joe to stop and think about nice things. Or not – but that’s besides the point. The point is thus – let people have their fun. Don’t waste your time sewing around bad feelings just because you’ve decided you want to be bent out of shape. Unless someone is cramming chocolates and flowers and sappy poetry directly in your face, let folks enjoy their day. After all – nice breeds nice, and bad breeds bad; stomping all over someone elses’ day just ’cause you’re not feeling it is bad mojo, yo. 😉
Whatever the case, you guys all have a nice day, and y’know – be nice to each other. That’s the true way!
